Designated Employer Representative (DER)

Under DOT regulations (49 CFR Part 40), the DER is the key individual authorized by an employer to take immediate action on drug and alcohol testing matters. You are the person who makes critical testing decisions, removes employees from safety-sensitive duties when necessary, and serves as your company’s primary point of contact for compliance.

This course breaks down those complex federal rules into practical, easy-to-understand steps so you can confidently manage your testing program.

By completing this course, you will get:

  • A clear, plain-English breakdown of your core DER duties.

  • Practical guidance on handling positive tests, refusals, and recordkeeping.

  • A verified Certificate of Completion for your compliance records.

Reasonable Suspicion Training for Supervisors

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rule §382.603 requires all supervisors of commercial drivers to complete specific, mandatory training on substance abuse detection. This course fulfills the DOT requirement by delivering exactly 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes on controlled substances.

As a supervisor, you aren't expected to be a medical expert—but you are required to know when something isn't right. This course takes the guesswork out of the process.

What You Will Learn:

  • The Signs: How to identify the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of drug and alcohol use.

  • The Process: The exact steps to take when you suspect a driver is under the influence.

  • The Documentation: How to properly record your observations to legally and confidently justify a "reasonable suspicion" test.

  • The Conversation: Best practices for approaching the driver and removing them from safety-sensitive duties.
